Desktop Virtualization ROI: 4 Benefits that Change the Equation

Bookmark and Share
Desktop virtualization technology has been rather slow to gain favor in the enterprise in part because of perceived cost concerns. Let’s face it, with the plummeting cost of hardware, you can likely buy replacement desktops for $600 to $800.  The cost to implement desktop virtualization may run closer to $1,000 per seat.

But those figures are misleading, says Phil Magnuszewski, director of data center technologies at Carousel, because they don’t take into consideration the many benefits that desktop virtualization delivers. When you add up the soft dollars associated with these benefits, the cost equation quickly tips in desktop virtualization’s favor.

The benefits of desktop virtualization fall into four main categories, as follows:

Desktop Virtualization Eases Management

Think about what goes in to upgrading a single desktop operating system. Assuming you have automated tools in place, IT pushes the image out across the network and installs it on a user’s machine. But if a problem crops up, such as a user who has loaded software that’s not compatible with the new OS – a common occurrence – it requires manual time and effort to rectify the situation.

With desktop virtualization, IT creates a single “golden” image of the OS on a server in the data center. Each user takes advantage of the same golden image. So, in effect, IT manages only a single image, not hundreds or thousands. It’s also a simple matter to create multiple such images for different groups, each outfitted with all the apps that users in that group need.

Improved Security with Desktop Virtualization

With desktop virtualization, all data lives in the data center, not on the user’s desktop. If a user’s laptop is lost or stolen, the company loses only hardware; the really valuable part – the user’s data – remains safe in the data center. Think about all the stories you’ve read about lost or stolen laptops leading to data breaches that damage a company’s reputation. That threat goes away with desktop virtualization.

What’s more, as malware gets ever more insidious, it can be difficult to ensure that any given desktop is not infected. With desktop virtualization, the slate is wiped clean every time a user logs on; even if a user does pick up a virus from a web site or via email, it’ll be gone the next day.

Business Continuity

Better security leads to improved business continuity, since users experience less downtime. What’s more, housing all user data in the data center means it is all subject to the same data protection practices as all server data, such as backups to a remote disaster recovery site, which improves business continuity even more.

True Mobility

Housing desktop images in the data center also means users can access their complete desktop environment from wherever they may be, using whatever device they choose. Whether at home or on the road, users can be equally productive. And no VPN is required, Magnuszewski says, only an SSL connection.

While it may be difficult to assign a hard dollar cost to these various benefits, the soft cost benefits associated with desktop virtualization should be immediately obvious – and probably well worth any added expense vs. traditional desktops.
