Colleges and universities have long had to deal with students bringing all sorts of devices to campus, and wanting to connect to the campus network – usually wirelessly. “Colleges were the original bring your own device test bed,” says Chris Williams, a systems engineer with Carousel Industries. Well now the movement is headed downstream to K-12 schools. Consider what’s happening at Burlington High School in Burlington, Mass. As a story from the Burlington Union explains: Under the guidance of the schools’ Educational Technology Team (ETT), a five-year plan started this fall when every student at BHS received an Apple iPad… Continue Reading ›

Tablet computers are entering the workplace at a furious pace, as employees who use the devices at home look to bring the same level of convenience and productivity to work. That is creating something of a challenge for IT folks, who must ensure they get the same experience in the workplace as they do at home. The issue really comes to a head with respect to video, says Dan Hofferty, national sales manager for visual communications for Carousel Industries. “If you have the ability to do video from your mobile tablet, then you can use it almost as you would… Continue Reading ›

At Gartner Symposium ITxpo last week in Orlando, Gartner presented its annual list of Top 10 Strategic Technologies, which it defines as technologies that will have a “significant and disruptive impact on IT or the business within the next three years.” Perhaps the biggest surprise on the list was that cloud computing barely made it, coming in at number 10. It’s not for lack of hype, said David Clearley, VP and Gartner Fellow, as “cloud” is still the most-searched term on the Gartner web site. But companies are all starting to build it into their strategies. Let’s look at the… Continue Reading ›

Kindle Fire Presents Challenges and Concerns for Corporate IT

Bookmark and Share
As of this writing, the $199 Kindle Fire, still a month away from shipping, is the most wished-for product in the Amazon.com Electronics area (in fact, various Kindle models take the top 10 spots).  While the Fire is a distinctly consumer-oriented device, there are two areas where it may well have enterprises sitting up and taking notice. Amazon Silk: A New Kind of Browser for Mobile Devices First is the Silk browser that comes with the Fire. Silk is a lightweight browser that augments its on-board processor with the power of Amazon Web Services (AWS) computers.  As Amazon explains: All… Continue Reading ›

Jabra Podcast Interview: In a Unified Communications World, Voice is Still King

Imagine you’re viewing a webcast and the presenter runs into a glitch that prevents him from advancing to the next slide for a few seconds. No big deal, we’ve all seen that lots of times, right? You don’t give it a second thought. But what if the audio keeps cutting out, so you’re missing a few words every 30 seconds or so? That you can’t handle; it touches a primal annoyance button deep inside you. If it keeps up you’ll likely click on the X and be done with the whole thing. Such is the power of voice communications, even… Continue Reading ›

In some ways, it’s an IT manager’s worst nightmare: seemingly every employee has a laptop, a smart phone and, increasingly, a tablet computer that they want – no, expect – to be able to connect to the company network. We talked about the problem with Phil Magnuszewski, director of data center technologies at Carousel, and, he immediately shared a story that nicely illustrates the issue. “The other day we had a quarterly business review meeting with one of our partner companies, with my boss and I and three others, talking about the whole mobility movement and the idea that everybody… Continue Reading ›

Amcom Interview: The Changing Face of Hospital Communications

Bookmark and Share
Remember the days when Communication Systems in hospitals meant pagers for doctors and speaking to an operator before getting transferred to a room for you? Those days are quickly disappearing as hospitals automate processes and make their communications infrastructure the focal point of that effort. Take a listen to this fascinating interview with Brian Edds, from Carousel partner Amcom Software, in which we discuss the ways hospitals are changing and the ways in which they are using data, mobile devices and communications systems to strealine processes, improve patient care and lower costs. Some of the topics we review include: Mobility… Continue Reading ›

In compelling (at least for a computer security geek) testimony delivered before Congress earlier this week, Assistant Attorney General Jason Weinstein spoke to the privacy and security threats facing US citizens and corporations from the Department of Justice’s perspective. His comments focused on the explosive growth of mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) and the security risks these devices face from what he describes as “organized, international, profit-driven cybercriminals”. He continues: “Every day, criminals hunt for our personal and financial data so that they can use it to commit fraud or sell it to other criminals. The technology revolution has facilitated… Continue Reading ›

Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would have something in common with stock market watchdog theStreet.  Much to my surprise, I do!  TheStreet just came out with an article on the “5 Cisco Alternatives“, Juniper, Aruba, Polycom, Riverbed and Fortinet, all five of which Carousel represents, and I talk with customers about on a daily basis.  TheStreet has noticed a trend that I have personally been seeing as well, “best of breed” is becoming more important than “brand name”. TheStreet’s five technology picks to watch out for are Juniper Networks, Riverbed, Polycom, Aruba Networks and Fortinet. … Continue Reading ›
