Around this time of year, we love reading all the “best of” and “worst of” lists recounting the past 12 months, along with the predictions of what’s to come. This week we stumbled on a good piece at Smartplanet.com highlighting “10 game-changing business innovations for 2012.” While all 10 of the technologies listed bear watching, we think the following four are particularly interesting and, for the most part, especially relevant to our IT audience. Cloud Computing Accelerates As the Smartplanet post points out: Thanks to the availability of powerful and low-cost on-demand technologies, innovators now have access to computing and… Continue Reading ›

Jabra Podcast Interview: In a Unified Communications World, Voice is Still King

Imagine you’re viewing a webcast and the presenter runs into a glitch that prevents him from advancing to the next slide for a few seconds. No big deal, we’ve all seen that lots of times, right? You don’t give it a second thought. But what if the audio keeps cutting out, so you’re missing a few words every 30 seconds or so? That you can’t handle; it touches a primal annoyance button deep inside you. If it keeps up you’ll likely click on the X and be done with the whole thing. Such is the power of voice communications, even… Continue Reading ›

In some ways, it’s an IT manager’s worst nightmare: seemingly every employee has a laptop, a smart phone and, increasingly, a tablet computer that they want – no, expect – to be able to connect to the company network. We talked about the problem with Phil Magnuszewski, director of data center technologies at Carousel, and, he immediately shared a story that nicely illustrates the issue. “The other day we had a quarterly business review meeting with one of our partner companies, with my boss and I and three others, talking about the whole mobility movement and the idea that everybody… Continue Reading ›

A recent report from the World Health Organization (WHO) is once again bringing to the fore talk of the risk of cancer from cell phones. The report, from the WHO’s Interactional Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), put cell phones in the samecarcinogenic hazard category as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform. As CNN reported: “The biggest problem we have is that we know most environmental factors take several decades of exposure before we really see the consequences,” said Dr. Keith Black, chairman of neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The type of radiation coming out of a cell… Continue Reading ›

In compelling (at least for a computer security geek) testimony delivered before Congress earlier this week, Assistant Attorney General Jason Weinstein spoke to the privacy and security threats facing US citizens and corporations from the Department of Justice’s perspective. His comments focused on the explosive growth of mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) and the security risks these devices face from what he describes as “organized, international, profit-driven cybercriminals”. He continues: “Every day, criminals hunt for our personal and financial data so that they can use it to commit fraud or sell it to other criminals. The technology revolution has facilitated… Continue Reading ›

How IT can stay in front of the Consumer Device Market

Smartphone Users

In this rapidly moving marketplace, it seems as if there are new Smartphones and Tablets coming into the market every week. This presents a serious challenge for businesses as employees purchase these devices and request that they be allowed to connect them to the corporate network. Supporting all devices and operating systems becomes unwieldy and expensive, so limiting access to a defined universe of consumer devices that IT endorses and supports makes sense. How do businesses and IT teams make decisions on which devices to support? According to Scott Moody, Carousel’s Manager of Corporate Technology, it is about security capabilities, consistency of… Continue Reading ›
