The industry is moving into a new phase of cloud computing, one where cloud technology is used to deliver a more collaborative environment. Think of it as Cloud 2.0, says David Murashige, vice president of business development for Avaya, a key Carousel Industries partner. Cloud’s first phase was all about cost reduction and simplification, he says, in that it freed companies from having to manage all of their own systems. “What has changed is that the level of capability that can be delivered in the cloud has increased significantly,” Murashige says. Now the cloud can deliver unified communications solutions including… Continue Reading ›

Addressing the Security Issues that Virtualization Presents

Bookmark and Share
Virtualization technology is helping companies save money by consolidating data center infrastructure while increasing their agility in terms of being able to meet business requirements. But the more companies delve into virtualization, the more they realize it’s also creating substantial new challenges in terms of security. Limited Visibility with Virtual Servers The problem stems from the fact that much of the data traffic in a highly virtualized environment is completely invisible to traditional network monitoring and security tools. As Peter Peter McMullen, Cloud Security Specialist at Juniper Networks explained during a recent conversation, “The reason is these tools – whether… Continue Reading ›

Differences Between Virtualization and Cloud Environments

Virtualization Does Not Equal Cloud, But They Are Related As Director of Cloud and Virtualization Solutions at Carousel Industries, Phil Magnuszewski gets asked lots of questions about IT architectures and technologies. One question he gets frequently of late, he says, is something to the effect of, “Is cloud technology essentially the same as virtualization?” The short answer is, “no,” Magnuszewski says, although virtualization does enable a cloud environment. To shed light on the subject, today we’re going to offer our perspective on what constitutes virtualization and how it relates to private cloud, public cloud and hybrid cloud technologies.  (For information… Continue Reading ›

Around this time of year, we love reading all the “best of” and “worst of” lists recounting the past 12 months, along with the predictions of what’s to come. This week we stumbled on a good piece at Smartplanet.com highlighting “10 game-changing business innovations for 2012.” While all 10 of the technologies listed bear watching, we think the following four are particularly interesting and, for the most part, especially relevant to our IT audience. Cloud Computing Accelerates As the Smartplanet post points out: Thanks to the availability of powerful and low-cost on-demand technologies, innovators now have access to computing and… Continue Reading ›

3 Technologies We’re Thankful for this Year

Happy Thanksgiving!!

It’s almost Thanksgiving (here in the U.S., at least) so we thought we’d take a moment and reflect on what technologies we have to be thankful for this year.  There was a lot of back and forth during conversations around the water cooler, but we came up with a few that everyone agreed on, all of which can be lumped under the “Consumerization of IT” umbrella – a trend we think will continue to acclerate and that you’ll be hearing more and more about in coming months and years. 1. Cloud Delivers Increased Agility, Lower Costs and More Cloud technology… Continue Reading ›

It’s been nearly a year since former U.S. CIO Vivek Kundra issued his call for government agencies to shift to a“Cloud First” policy, which states: When evaluating options for new IT deployments, OMB will require that agencies default to cloud-based solutions whenever a secure, reliable, cost-effective cloud option exists. To facilitate this shift, we will be standing up secure government-wide cloud computing platforms. Agencies were required to identify at least three services that could migrate to the cloud. And they’ve apparently been making steady progress, as they’ve idendtifed at least 78 systems that have or are in the progress of… Continue Reading ›

Kindle Fire Presents Challenges and Concerns for Corporate IT

As of this writing, the $199 Kindle Fire, still a month away from shipping, is the most wished-for product in the Amazon.com Electronics area (in fact, various Kindle models take the top 10 spots).  While the Fire is a distinctly consumer-oriented device, there are two areas where it may well have enterprises sitting up and taking notice. Amazon Silk: A New Kind of Browser for Mobile Devices First is the Silk browser that comes with the Fire. Silk is a lightweight browser that augments its on-board processor with the power of Amazon Web Services (AWS) computers.  As Amazon explains: All… Continue Reading ›

Beyond Consolidation: Mining the Many Benefits of Server Virtualization

While seemingly every company is considering taking advantage of virtualization technology to some degree, it seems many aren’t getting as much out of it as they could – or should. According to a recent “Magic Quadrant” report by Gartner on the x86 Server Virtualization Infrastructure market (PDF): As of mid-2011, at least 40% of x86 architecture workloads have been virtualized on servers; furthermore, the installed base is expected to grow five-fold from 2010 through 2015 (as both the number of workloads in the marketplace grow and as penetration grows to more than 75%). Virtualization lays the foundation for cloud Considering… Continue Reading ›

5 Questions to Ask When Choosing a Cloud Backup Provider

At Carousel, we are consistently having discussions about cloud and virtualization strategies with clients and prospects, and sooner or later (usually sooner), the conversation always gets around to cloud backup.  The concept seems like low-hanging fruit….it is redundant, off-site, cost-effective (isn’t it?), and allows you to scale quickly.  What’s not to like? Because of this perception, it is often one of the early areas of focus when businesses develop a cloud strategy.  But it is not as easy as throwing your data onto a remote server and forgetting about it.  As with all aspects of cloud migration, it should be… Continue Reading ›

Caught in the Middle: Addressing IT Challenges for Mid-Market Companies

Many newer technology solutions address the problems large enterprises encounter within their datacenter, and are scaled to sustain large infrastructure requirements. Large companies require continuous production environments and need an IT backbone that supports this continuity. In addition, hosted solutions have opened the door for small companies to take advantage of high-end datacenter solutions without high capital investment costs. Smaller businesses often do not require as extensive solution sets, but still need a backbone IT for common business tasks. Also, limited IT staffcreates obstacles for managing their environments properly, leaning decision makers towards hosted solutions. While newer solutions fit well within… Continue Reading ›
